BENEFIT OF E-WASTE RECYCLING

BENEFIT OF E-WASTE RECYCLING

E-waste contains many precious metals, like gold which can be easily retrieved from old computers. It means E-waste recycling can be successfully employed to meet the scarcity of metal in the world.

Conserves Natural Resources: Recycling recovers valuable materials from old electronics that can be used to make new products. As a result, we save energy, reduce pollution, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save natural resources by extracting fewer raw materials from the earth.

Protects Environment: E-waste recycling provides proper handling and management of toxic chemical substances like mercury, lead and cadmium contained in the e-waste stream.

Creates Jobs: E-waste recycling creates new jobs for professional recyclers and creates a second market for the recycled materials.

Saves Landfills: E-waste recycling saves unnecessary dumps and landfills.

E-WASTE RECYCLING CAUSES AND EFFECTS

E-waste recycling cause and effects almost each and every system of the human body due to the overabundance of toxic components and particles such as Lead Mercury, Cadmium, Barium, Lithium and Poly brominated Flame Retardants.

EPR AND ITS IMPACT

EPR AND ITS IMPACT

Out of tonnes of E-waste generated by Indian, the government, public sector companies, and private sector companies generate nearly 75% of waste. – Source

An essential part of running a business requires updating your electronic devices. Old cable and computers make the general office waste, andthe majority of businesses are not sure what to do with e-waste. You are not alone when it comes to recycling E-waste,but it is really necessary to make a difference to the environment and society.

It is where EPR comes into the picture. EPR or extended producer responsibility is a policy under which producers are givensignificantresponsibility for the sustainable disposal of post-consumer products.

Here is how EPR impact social and environment.

Bring a positive difference to the environment

The greatest benefit of recycling is undoubtedly making a positive impact on the environment. Many electronic devices contain heavy metals like lead and mercury which is extremely harmful once they enter the environment. Disposing of e-waste in landfills triggers the problem as it jointly pollutesthe air, water, and soil. EPR helps producers to safely, soundly and sustainable recover and recycle the E-waste.

The used electronic waste contains many non-renewable resources which can be easily recovered and re-used to make new products.

It gives an opportunity to unorganized sector to work with formal sector and earn reputation in society and improve their living standard.
Helps them to improve their living standard.

Helps them to earn and learn because of their association with formal recyclers.

Awareness program is major activity to be performed under EPR and helps to educate our new generation to conserve natural resources and reduse pollution level.

Happy employees
Employees have now realized the value of e-waste recycling. And so they water their workplace to be aware of EPR and its benefits. Increasing number of employees look forward to working with the companies which areconsiderate about sustainable E-waste disposal. Sustainable workplace help retains current employees.

Improve brand reputation

Showing commitment to the environmentimproves the brand reputation of a producer company among current as wells as prospective customers. Businesses who actively strive to comply with EPR rules, and strive to make a positive impact on the environment make more good business partners. Implement E-waste recycling is a simple way to increase your businesses green score. Moreover, corporate social responsibility initiatives help your customers demonstrate that you are a responsible producer as well as a citizen.

 Recover resources

By recycling end-of-life electronics, many valuable resources are prevented from entering landfills. They can be smartly used to produce more goods and distribute them to make products at lower prices. In short, EPR benefits all – producers, consumers and the general public and make them responsible for recycling and the environment.

In a nutshell, EPR helps sustainable E-waste recycling, conservation of resources, energy efficiency and economic growth. In addition, it also helps to create jobs.

EPR GUIDELINES

EPR GUIDELINES

Many of the recommendations regarding the good governance of EPR systems identified in 2001 OECD guideline manual are still relevant and should be applied.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is the responsibility of every producer of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) for channelisation of e-waste to an authorised dismantler/recycler to ensure environmentally sound management of such waste.

EPR authorisation is mandatory and has to be obtained by all the producers including importers, e-retailers/on-line sellers/e-bay etc. of EEE covered in E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016. A producer can implement its EPR either through take-back system or by setting up collection centres or both for channelisation of e-waste/end of life products to authorised dismantlers/recyclers. The producers are required to have arrangements with authorised dismantlers/recyclers either individually or collectively or through a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) or EWaste Exchange system as spelt in their EPR Plan which is approved/authorised by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Selling or placing of EEE in the market by any producer without EPR Authorisation shall be considered as violation of the Rules and causing damage to the environment, which shall attract provisions under E (P) Act, 1986.
